| | Tool - 10,000 days | ] | I'm in Seattle this week on a business trip. So far it's been a lot of fun. Work is pretty much paying for everything, so I get to eat out a lot :P I was driving around Seattle yesterday and ended up at the Space Needle, so I decided to eat there. It was really amazing seeing such a great view of Puget Sound at dusk. (I have no concept of time right now, so I got there at about 8:00PM and stayed until about 10:00)
I was driving around again today and ended up in some suburb (I think it was called Kirkland?) and stopped at a beautiful lake. I took a few pictures, and I'll post them tomorrow when I get them uploaded.
I forgot how beautiful everything is up here. Sure, we have lakes and trees in Arkansas, but they're just that - lakes and trees. In the pacific northwest, everything is so green and full of life. It's been almost 5 years since I've been up here, and I can't believe what a difference there is between where I live now and where I used to live. I'm seriously thinking about moving back here.
I'm probably going to drive to Portland tomorrow, just to see it. If I leave right after work, I should still get there while it's light.
Another amazing thing that happened today: My 18 month old daughter started counting to 10 today, out of nowhere. No one taught her how to do it, she was just in the back seat of the car and started counting. If I hadn't heard it for myself I wouldn't have believed it. My only guess is that she picked it up from one of her electronic books she likes to play with.
My mom started her off over the phone, and it went pretty much like this: Mom: One, two... Gwen: Three... Mom: Four... Gwen: Five... Mom: Six... Gwen: Seben... Mom: Eight... Gwen: Nine... Mom: 10! Gwen: Yay!
I'm so proud of her. |

| | okay | ] | I haven't been at work much lately; on account of an interesting combination of snow days, sick days, off days, and vacation days, I've only worked 2 days in the last week. Woohoo!
What little work I have done this week has been pretty good though. One of my friends beat me out for a supervisor position, which basically means that he gets stuck with all the HR crap while I get to be the guy that fixes all the technical problems. Also, one of the local switch techs told me that I should be doing his job since I basically did all his work before I called him, and my manager said that I'm one of the best guys in the department. It's nice to know that I'm making a difference at work instead of just filling a seat.
I went down to the Sav-A-Bundle store today looking for computer stuff, and ended up with about $40 worth of various crap, including a stack of popcorn buckets and a gallon of hydrogen peroxide. I guess there's not much I won't buy for $2.50. Hooray stuff!
I still haven't gotten real internet yet, SBC keeps jacking me around and canceling my DSL order, then resubmitting it and canceling it again. I eventually told them to "stick it up yo ass" and I'm just using my cell phone for internet access. I might get cable some time, but $60 a month is still a little too steep for me. |

| | sick | ] | I think I have some kind of stomach virus. I had to leave work early so I could go home and sleep. Hopefully I will feel better tomorrow.
On the plus side, it snowed today. I haven't actually seen it yet, I just saw Marcy and Gwen covered in it when they got back from the store. |

| | happy | ] | I finally broke my laptop. Total time: ~5 days. Apparently XP boots from "disk 0 partition 1" instead of "C:\" so monkeying with partitions is a bad idea. That's what I love about XP though, once you manage to crash it, there's no coming back. Piece o' crap. Oh well, it actually only took me 18 hours (including 4 hours of XBOX and 6 hours of sleeping) to get everything back the way it was. Hooray!
Honestly though, why would I need a hidden boot partition, 4 recovery CDs, and have to make 4 more backup CDs when I run Windows the first time? Couldn't we have called it "excessive" with 2 backup methods and skipped the CD-Rs? Of course, like all good recovery methods, once the size of the partition has changed you will not be able to run any of the recovery CDs.
But it's okay!
Also, the Windows Validation Tool gave me a good laugh this morning. (FYI: Windows Validation Tool is Microsoft's latest attempt to make people feel bad about pirating software by not letting bootleg copies of Windows access "Windows Update." It was hacked less than 24 hours after its initial release.) I had heard about how easy it was to get past, but COME ON! "Tools > Manage Addons???" I hope the people who figured out how to get past all of your copy protection up to this point don't think to check their internet options! |

| | excited | ] | So about an hour after I posted my official "I'm back" message, I broke the internet. Specifically, I smashed my bluetooth adapter into several pieces, so I couldn't connect through my phone anymore. Hooray.
But it's ok now! My new laptop came in a day early, and to my surprise, my neighbors have turned off their wireless network encryption! Woooooooo!! Free interweb all around!
Something important probably happened in the last few days, but it doesn't have to do with my new laptop, so I'll skip it.
I'm going to be so pissed in a few days when I break this thing. But for now, free internet laptop overload!! \m/ >_< \m/ |

| | geeky | ] | Well, I managed to MacGyver an internet connection together again, so I figure I'll start updating this again. If anyone's interested on what I've been up to, you can go to http://www.jaydavisonline.com and read my news posts. I mainly just update the site when I'm at work or when I find a cool link online. Most of the site is geared toward either web page development or weird computer projects I've been working on. I'm going to try to use this as more of an actual journal, and keep the site aimed toward technical stuff.
So on that note, I'm going to go take my computer over to my brother's house and plug it into his big screen TV so that we can play StarCraft.

| | artistic | ] | I remember when I used to post cool stuff about cool stuff. Weyll, I guess I'll just talk nonsense for a while to get it out of my system.
We have this "bossware" monitoring system on our computers at work, for our quality monitoring. Obviously I can't bypass it, because then I'd be the only one not being monitored. So, I just have this big long list of open ports running down the left side of my screen so I can see what all programs are connecting through the network. If I see the bossware port open, I know to mind my p's & q's. The main downside to this is that it looks really weird having all these numbers constantly scroll down the left hand side of my screen all day. People keep asking me what I'm doing, but I just tell them that it's "The Matrix," and then they get confused and leave. |

| | peaceful | ] | Hey, I just remembered. I have a Live Journal.
I know it's been way too long since I've written anything. I still haven't finished building my computer, so I mostly just update this at work. We usually have way too many people calling in to update very much, but the last couple weeks it's been pretty slow. This week is "customer service week," which basically means we get to play games and eat food. This year the theme is Pirates. This gives me an excuse to walk around with a plastic sword all week. Sometimes I wave it around to get people's attention.
I'll write more later. |

| | crap | ] | I just wanted to say, I'm pretty cool. I found this "WWJD bracelet kit" thing, and I made me one that says "¿ W W W ?" It's pretty sweet, because it stands for "What what what?" but at the same time, it is also in Spanish. I didn't have any Q's though. Also, if you turn it upside down, it says "¿ M M M ?" |
